Psychoacoustics is the way we perceive sound mentally. It lets us measure how far away the source of a sound is when we hear it, distinguish it, and make decisions based on that information. Psychoacoustics is comprised of four main parts.
Binaural Hearing- Allows us to measure the distance and location of the source of sound just by hearing it.
Pitch and Loudness- How humans perceive the frequency and and volume of sound.
Timbre- How humans can distinguish different sources of sound even when their volume and pitch are the same (ex. a piano from a guitar).
Masking- The ability of one sound to mute another sound so that it can not be heard.
